Bingo is a commonly played game where the players each select a card with five vertical columns and five horizontal rows. Each card is filled with randomly placed numbers, with no two cards being exactly the same. The ‘reader’ then randomly draws a number and calls it out to the players. All players having that number on their card mark that box off. The reader then draws another card and calls it out and the players do the same thing for the new item and so on and so forth. The winner is the player who marks out all the boxes on his or her card first and calls out “Bingo!” Some variations require the winner to mark out boxes in a pre-determined pattern, such as five boxes in a row going any direction, or to form simple pictures. Bingo has been a favorite pastime of children and adults alike. Genius in its simple game play, Bingo has an easily customizable format that can be altered to fit a wide variety of needs, both educational and recreational, and has been widely used over the years for a multitude of purposes including education, gambling, and entertainment, and even for fundraisers.
Bingo is thought to have originated in 1530 from a weekly Italian lottery called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia.” The game spread from Italy to France, and was soon adopted in Germany in the 1800’s as a tool to help teach students math. Bingo finally made its way to America in 1929 where it made its debut at carnivals and fairs traveling across the country as a game called “Beano”. While visiting the fair one day, Edwin S. Lowe, a toy salesman from New York, was observing a Beano game when he heard a woman cry out “Bingo,” a mispronunciation if the word “Beano,” and thus sparked the idea to market this carnival pastime as the game “Bingo.” The idea was a huge success and the game Bingo is still very popular today.
The large majority of Bingo players are women, with 2 ½ million women playing regularly. So, it is a good game for men to play while looking for single women. However, most bingo players are older so the male would have to prefer older women. While there is a high chance of winning, usually drawing a cash reward, most people report playing Bingo for the companionship, with the cash opportunity only being a pleasant added bonus. Because the game is strictly randomized, strategy, to a large extent is removed from the picture, giving everyone an equal chance to win, greatly adding to the game’s appeal. Many Bingo halls exist today both across the country and online. Churches, town halls, Nursing Homes, and pubs are common places where one can catch a weekly Bingo game if interested.
Bringing people together for years now, Bingo is likely to remain a favorite pastime of Americans across the country, though as technology advances it may continue to trend more toward an online setting. Nevertheless, Bingo is one of those timeless games that is likely to continue to be passed down over the centuries to come. With thousands of possibilities for customization Bingo will continue to be used in schools to teach math, spelling, and reading. With a little creativity, the concept of a Bingo game can be used for many other purposes as well. In the end, Bingo is a simple game that can bring big rewards, including the satisfaction of companionship and a very high chance to win. It’s hardly a mystery why the game has been such a huge success for so many years!
